Abstract

1362984 Photo-electric distance measuring EASTMAN KODAK CO 23 Sept 1971 [28 Sept 1970] 44349/71 Heading H4D A rangefinder comprises a light source 47, an optical system and a transparency 53 for projecting a contrast pattern on to an object 41. A lens 22 is used to focus the pattern on to a photo-cell 44 which gives an abrupt change at its output (Fig. 3, not shown) when the pattern is in focus on the cell, indicating the object range. A chopper 54 or electronic means is preferably provided to give an A.C. signal from the cell which is passed to a band-pass filter 77 centred on the chopper frequency. A detector circuit 78 and switch 81 are provided to determine when the pattern is in focus on the cell and serve to switch off lens adjusting motor 28 driving lenses 22, 23 and camera lens 14, the lenses being initially at infinity focus position. To enhance the signal to noise ratio an optical filter 58 limiting the received light to the part of the spectrum to which the cell is most responsive can be provided. A lens stop 57 may be used to enhance the abrupt change in the cell output. To maintain the amount of light received by cell 44 constant as lens 22 is moved various aperture systems may be provided (Figs. 4, 5, not shown). The response of the cell when no such system is used (Fig. 3, not shown) is thus flattened out (Fig. 6, not shown) and enables a simple threshold detector to be used for switch 81.
