Abstract
1363086 Photographic silver halide colour material AGFA-GEVAERT A G 8 Dec 1971 [8 Dec 1970] 56982/71 Heading G2C A photographic material comprises at least one photo-sensitive silver halide emulsion layer and has in the emulsion layer and/or an immediately adjacent layer or spread over both a combination of (a) a colourless non-diffusing colour coupler which forms a non-diffusing image dye on reaction with colour developer oxidation products; (b) a non-diffusing mask-former which forms, during photographic processing, a colour mask to mask the side density of the image dye; and (c) a colourless non-diffusing DIR compound which splits off a diffusing development-inhibiting substance on reaction with colour developer oxidation products; wherein mask-former (b) and/or DIR compound (c) does not contribute towards formation of an image dye during photographic processing. The mask-former (b) may have the formula: – wherein R 1 and R 2 are each H, alkyl, aryl, aralkyl or heterocyclyl or together with the carbon atoms to which they are attached, represent a carbocyclic or heterocyclic ring, and R 3 and R 4 are each an optionally substituted aromatic, or optionally substituted heterocyclic group. Alternatively the mask-former (b) may have the formula:- wherein R 5 is – CONH 2 or -SO 2 X wherein X is OH, optionally substituted amino, optionally substituted aliphatic hydrocarbon or optionally substituted aromatic hydrocarbon; R 6 and R 7 are each alkyl, allyl, aralkyl or aryl, or both, together with the nitrogen atom to which they are attached, represent a heterocyclic ring; and R 8 is alkyl, aralkyl, optionally substituted aryl or heterocyclyl; or R 7 and R 8 together with the atoms to which they are attached, represent a heterocyclic ring. Mask-former (b) may be a coloured coupler. DIR compound (c) may have the formula:- wherein E is aryl or aromatic heterocyclyl; R 9 is H, alkyl, aryl or -S -E; and X is benzoyl carrying at least one substituent which contains alkyl with at least 10 carbon atoms. The coloured images produced have improved colour reproduction, balanced gradation, improved definition and refined colour grain.
