Abstract

1363130 Modulating light SIEMENS AG 7 July 1971 [14 July 1970] 31791/71 Heading H4F [Also in Division H1] An optical store comprises a coherent light optical system arranged to project coherent light on to a storage medium that is not optically active but whose optical transparency can be locally and reversibly modified by an electron beam, means being provided to control the direction and intensity of the beam. The storage medium may be an alkali halide or a thin semi-conductor film of high absorption which may be cancelled in certain spectral ranges by saturation induced by electron incidence and may be a Ga, As, P mix, e.g. GaAs (1-x) P x of thickness 0À3 to 3 Á. Auxiliary sources may erase and sensitize respectively. Volumetric and/or surface conductivity may be such as to reduce charge formation, and electrodes may dissipate charges produced by the electron beam. Mirror Sp may be provided (Fig. 2, not shown) for both types, and Fig. 3 (not shown) includes variable transparency optical filter SM of semi-conductor type, 2 mirrors Sp1 and Sp, lenses 0, laser M, and electron beam Es controlling film SM to render mirror Sp effect only at point of impact. SM may itself simultaneously act as an additional laser amplifier material. Windows F are at the Brewster angle, and edge electrodes e provide rapid charge balancing. Output may be via mirror Sp1 or Sp. Fig. 4 (not shown) includes flange k, with closure plate Tr with film SM detachably secured by screws (not shown), sealing ring d, coherent light Ls passing through window F at the Brewster angle, movable plate Kp movable by a magnetic device for example to create an air-lock for the beam generator Ee for target replacement, ion gettering pump IP, first stage pump VP. If the store is long term, an auxiliary radiation source may erase and also a further source may sensitize. The medium SM may be of either types described w.r.t. Figs. 1 and 2.
