Abstract
1365592 Metal salts of phosphorus-containing complex esters MONSANTO CO 25 July 1972 34640/72 Heading C2P [Also in Division C5] A complex organophosphorus esterification product comprises an alkali metal or rare earth metal salt of a mixed ester of (i) a polyhydric alcohol free of beta-hydrogen atoms, (ii) a carboxylic acylating agent and (iii) a polybasic phosphorus compound capable of esterifying the polyol. Typical reagents are (i) neopentyl glycol, pentaerythritol and trimethylol propane; (ii) mono- and poly-carboxylic C 4 -C 50 acids, acid halides, anhydrides or acid esters, optionally substituted by N-, O-, S- and halogencontaining groups; (iii) phosphoric, phosphorous and phosphonic acids or esters, amides or anhydrides thereof, and halophosphates, halophosphites or halophosphonates. A mixed ester may be made by esterifying the polyol with a mixture of carboxylic and phosphoric acids, or by esterifying with the two acids in separate steps. The salt is made by contacting the mixed ester with a base at 120-160‹ C. Specified bases are K, Na, Li, Cs or Rb hydroxide, acetate or carbonate and La, Ce, Pr hydroxides. The ratio of metal to phosphorus in the product, which is a mixture of esters, is preferably at least 0À8 : 1. The products are used as corrosion inhibitors in synthetic ester lubricants (Division C5), and in one embodiment, the mixed ester product is made in situ by treating the ester base stock with the phosphoric reagent (iii). In examples, mixed esters are made from (1) phosphorous acid, dipenta-erythritol, and either octanoic, dodecanoic or 2-ethylhexanoic acid; (2) octanoic acid, dipenta-erythritol and N,N
