Abstract
1365972 Cleaning tanks CHEVRON RESEARCH CO 1 Oct 1971 [1 Oct 1970] 45924/71 Heading A4F Apparatus for cleaning a ship’s cargo tank comprises a rotary spraying head 10 having at least two sets of opposed nozzles 30, 32 and 38, 40 rotatable in a substantially vertical plane about a substantially horizontal axis with respect to which the nozzle axes are offset, and the nozzles are proportioned and arranged so that in use there is produced by reaction of the discharged jets a desired resultant turning force and speed of rotation of the nozzles. The nozzles 30, 32 discharge the main cleaning jets and the nozzles 38, 40 discharge secondary jets producing reaction forces opposing the turning forces produced by the main jets. The nozzles are mounted on a carrier 26 rotatable on a horizontal tubular projection 24 on a housing 22 rotatable on a vertical cylinder 12 supported on a cleaning liquid supply conduit 20, the housing 22 being rotated by the nozzle carrier 26 via bevel gears 58, 80 having differing numbers of teeth. Each nozzle may have a tip 124, Fig. 5 (not shown) replaceable by another of different bore. An element 98 for diverting the liquid flow from the cylinder 12 into the projection 24 may be mounted on either of two screw threaded shoulders 134, 136 depending upon whether the spraying head 10 is disposed at the lower or at the upper end of a liquid supply conduit.
