Abstract

1371268 Nuclear fuel UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 2 March 1973 [22 March 1972] 13502/72 Heading G6C In the formation of fission product retaining coatings on nuclear fuel particles, a thin layer of SiC is applied to a pyrolytically deposited carbon coating to fill in irregularities in the surface, a layer of pyrocarbon thinner than the SiC layer is then applied, and then a thicker layer of silicon carbide. Finally a further layer of pyrocarbon may be deposited. A fluidized bed apparatus may be used for applying coatings to UO 2 spheroids at 1400-1600‹ C., mixtures of methyltrichlorosilane and argon being employed for the deposition of SiC, and a mixture of methane and argon for the pyrocarbon layers.
