Abstract
1374880 Bumpers DAIMLER-BENZ AG 20 Dec 1972 [21 Dec 1971 11 April 1972] 58806/72 Heading B7J A vehicle bumper assembly comprises a bumper body 2, Fig. 3a, which is supported by elastomeric blocks 13 in the direction transversely of a shock absorber 10, the end of which adjacent the front of the bumper body 2, in use, is received in an elastomeric insert 12, arranged so that the shock absorber 10, on the one hand, and the elastomerie blocks 13 and insert 12 on the other hand, act in series. The elastomeric insert 12 and blocks 13 are accommodated within a pocket 4, secured in the bumper body 2, and extend to a rod part 9 of the shock absorber 10 where they abut shoulders 14. The bumper body 2 is faced by a rubber strip 15 and may alternatively, Figs. 2 and 3b (not shown), consist of two body parts one above the other with the pocket 4 secured between them. The pocket 4 may receive two shock absorbers 10 in the same horizontal plane but at an acute angle to one another, Fig. 3b, which are interconnected at their rod parts 9 by blocks 13 and are received at thier ends by a common insert 12. While in the above forms the pocket 4 is inserted from the rear of the body 2, it may alternatively be inserted from the front as in Fig. 4 where pocket 4 is of rectangular or oval cross-section to receive a shoulder 14 having flattened sides to form a bayonet type of connection. As shown in Fig. 6, the shock absorber 10 carries a shell member 25 which includes radially extending trunnion pieces 24 fixed in elastomeric blocks 26 which are precompressed by a wall 27 and cover 28. The pieces 24 may be of non-circular cross-section. The insert 12 is secured to webs 22 of the bumper body 2 with its front face 23 spaced from the front wall of the body 2, so that the shock absorber 10 can freely pivot about the pieces 24.
