Abstract
1377627 Colour-separation systems RANK ORGANISATION Ltd 14 Aug1972 [1 Sept 1971] 40756/71 Heading G2J An apparatus for splitting a beam of light into three colour constituents G, R, B, comprises a plane colour-selective dichroic semi-reflector 2b inclined at α to the normal to the beam, a second plane colour-selective dichroic semi-reflector 3b inclined at # to the normal to the beam transmitted from 2b, a single total reflector 5b receiving the reflected beam from 3b, and at least one total reflector 2a receiving the reflected beam from 2b, the arrangement of parts being such that the beams G, R, B, undergo either zero or an even number of reflections. The beam B which has been reflected at 5b is preferably parallel to the axis of the transmitted beam R. The angle α is less than 30 degrees, and # must lie between 20 and 50 degrees and be greater than α; it is preferably between 30 and 45 degrees. The semi-reflectors 2b, 3b are formed on the rear faces of main prisms 2, 3, further prisms 4, 5 being provided en route to the receptors R 1 B 1 , and an entrance prism 1 is spaced by a small air gap at an angle # the beam, from the prism 2, thus reducing the angle of incidence at the semi-reflector 2b. The prisms 1, 5 may be omitted, see Fig.2 (not shown) and then # = 45 degrees. In both embodiments the beams G, R, B, lie in the same plane, but in another embodiment, Figs. 3A, 3B (not shown) the pnsms 1, 2, and the semi-reflector 2b, and the front surface 3a of the prism 3 are turned through 90 degrees about the incident axis, so that the beam G is normal to the plane containing B and R.
