Abstract

1378030 Reinforced metal sheets UNION CARBIDE CORP 19 Dec 1972 [20 Dec 1971] 58466/72 Heading C7D A sheet reinforced porous metal body is made by depositing a metal powder on to a sheet having projected segments, the powder depth at least covering the segments and sintering the assembly. The sheet, at least 0À001″ thick may be a metal, expanded metal or alloy such as Cu, stainless steel, Ni, Fe or Co base alloys, INCONEL, NICHROME, HASTELLOY or HAYNES (TRADE MARKS). The projected segments are formed in the sheet by stamping or punching and are preferably at 45-90 degrees with the sheet surface. They may also be formed as corrugations and the sheet may be a wire mesh. The metal powder may be Ni, Cu, Co, Fe, W, Ag, stainless steel, Ni base, Co base alloys, HASTELLOY, HAYNES (TRADE MARK) with an average particle size of 1-100 microns. Powders such as carbon and Raney Ni may be added and the metal powders are preferably deposited as a slurry in a liquid such as water, methanol, isopropanol, benzene toluene and/or acetone. The sintered body may be used as, abradable seals, brake shoe linings and bearing retainers.
