Abstract
1381628 Sanitary closets GENERAL AMERICAN TRANSPORTATION CORP 5 July 1972 [20 July – 1971] 31503/72 Heading E1C A sanitary closet and waste disposal system, suitable for a marine vessel, e.g. a tug boat, comprises a closet bowl 12 (Fig. 2), the outlet 20 of which is normally closed by a gate valve 21 which consists of a horizontal plate (Fig. 4) pivoted about a vertical axis, a tank 55 which receives waste and flushing- water from a chamber 40 (Fig. 1) below the gate valve upon operation of a transfer means, which is preferably a pump 42, but may be a motorised valve (57, Fig. 6, not shown) where the tank 55 is arranged beneath the closet, and a flushing arrangement operable in conjunction with the slide valve and consisting of a rotary reversing valve 14′ which alternately supplies water from a supply 80 to opposite ends of a cylinder 90 containing a floating piston 91 so that two increments of flushing water are delivered to the bowl when the valve rotor 15 is rotated first in one and then in the other direction. Operation is effected by depressing a pedal 13 which is mechanically coupled to a pedal 14 in such a way that pedal 14 moves down with pedal 13 but can be operated independently for the addition of flushing water to the bowl whilst maintaining the gate valve 21 closed. Pedal 14 is mechanically linked to the rotor 15 of valve 14′ by a link 70 and a lever arm (72, Fig. 5, not shown) secured to a shaft 73 secured to an extension (74) of the rotor 15. Pedal 13 is connected by a link 32 to a pin 23 on boss 23A of the gate valve 21 and is also connected by a rod 102 to a microswitch 1MSW which controls the motor MTR-1 of the pump 42 or motorised valve in the bottom of chamber 40. The tank 55 is equipped with a vent pipe 56 and electric heaters 1H, 2H, 3H, 4H which, when the level of waste and flushing water in the tank has reached level-sensing switch LSP-2, are energised to evaporate water until the level has dropped a predetermined amount. This process is repeated and, as the level of solids in the tank rises, temperature-sensing devices 4TCS, 3TCS, 2TCS, 1TCS are actuated in turn as a result of a rise in temperature at successively higher levels caused by the reduced heat transfer from the heaters in the presence of the solids, such actuation in each case preventing energisation of the respective heater 4H, 3H, 2H or 1H. Finally, when all the heaters are thus switched off, further flushing of waste and water into the tank causing the level to rise to near the top of the tank where a second level-sensing switch LSP-1 is positioned, operation of this switch causing the circuit to motor MTR-1 to be broken or an alarm to sound. Preferably an alarm is operated prior to this, e.g. when only one heater remains operative.
