Abstract

1389019 Glass composition PILKINGTON BROS Ltd and B YALE 27 Oct 1972 [3 Nov 1971] 51177/71 Heading C1M A glass composition used to produce alkaliresistant continuously-drawn glass fibres, comprises in molar percentages on the oxide basis: the balance, if any, consisting of other compatible constituents, where R = Na, up to 5 mol per cent of which may be replaced by Li or K, and the fluorine is included in substitution for oxygen in one or more of the oxides, the maximum value of the molar percentage represented by SiO 2 + ZrO 2 + AlO 1À5 being dependent linearly on the content of each of ZrO 2 and F 2 , ranging when F 2 = 9 mol per cent, from 89 mol per cent when the ZrO 2 content is 7 mol per cent, to 88 mol per cent when the ZrO 2 content is 8À5 mol per cent down to 87 mol per cent when the ZrO 2 content is 10 mol per cent, the said maximum value being reduced by a further 5 mol per cent over the whole scale when F 2 = 3 mol per cent. The glass composition may further comprise up to 11 mol per cent R1O, where R1 is Ca, up to 10 mol per cent of which may be replaced by MgO and/or MnO and up to 5 mol per cent of which may be replaced by BaO, SrO or ZnO or any combination thereof, the total of MgO, MnO, BaO, SrO and ZnO not exceeding 10 mol per cent. The glass composition may further comprise up to 5 mol per cent TiO 2 , boric oxide expressed as BO 5À5 ), or iron oxide (expressed as FeO 1À5 ), or any combination thereof, the total of AlO 1À5 , TiO 2 , BO 1À5 and FeO 1À5 not exceeding 10 mol per cent.
