Abstract

1389023 Surface wave devices STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd 3 Aug 1972 [5 Aug 1971] 36792/71 Heading H3U Acoustic surface, or interface, wave couplers comprise a pair of groups of transverse conductors 1 on a substrate which is piezoelectric, a piezo-layer on a non-piezo substrate, or has piezo-layers adjacent the couplers, and transducer 3, Fig. 10. The proportion of wave energy coupled from path A to adjacent path 13 increases with the coupler length. The cells of Fig. 1, may be longitudinally joined, and the whole construction longitudinally duplicated, Fig. 5 (not shown). The constructions of Figs. 2a, 2b may be modified to have triplets of interconnected conductors, Figs. 3a, 3b (not shown), or all the triplets connected together on one side and the whole construction duplicated longiudinally, Fig. 4 (not shown). To avoid unwanted reflections the conductor spacings in Figs. 2a, 2b may be increased progressively, Figs. 9a, 9b (not shown), or each group may have larger conductor spacing than the previous one Figs. 8a, 8b (not shown). Inductors 2, Fig. 6a, may be interposed in the interconnections across the paths, either a pair in series, Fig. 6b, or only one, Fig. 6a (not shown), to compensate interfinger capacitance, which may alternatively be compensated by a meander line (1A), Fig. 7 (not shown). Unidirectional transducer, Fig. 10.-The two parts of any of the above forms of coupler are folded back with respect to each other to form the array 6A, 6B, encompassing transducer 3, one eighth of an acoustic wavelength nearer part 6A than 6B, resulting in propagation unidirectionally along path A. Exemplary dimensions for 100 MHz are given.
