Abstract

1392291 Extruding reinforced tubes CREATORS Ltd 12 May 1972 [19 May 1971] 15894/71 Heading B5A [Also in Division F2] An extruded polymeric tube comprises a wall 1 of a first polymeric material reinforced by a second more rigid or mechanically stronger polymeric material 2, comprising axially extending and circumferentially spaced portions fused to the first material during simultaneous extrusion of both materials in a heat plasticized condition from a tubular die. One or both of the materials may be electrically conductive, for antistatic purposes, and the tube may have a polyurethane interior or exterior abrasion resistant lining, and a helical wire or tape reinforcement may be wound around the tube. The first and second materials may respectively comprise polyvinylchlorides of stated softnesses, nitrile rubber and polyvinylchloride, or polyurethane and nylon. The second material may comprise elements extending along the inner and/or outer tube wall and not embedded therein, or may comprise elements of generally triangular 2, Fig. 1, or semi-cylindrical configuration extending into the outer or inner wall of the first material 1, e g. to 65 to 90%, and preferably 80%, of the wall thickness, or generally rectangular section elements similarly extending in from both the outer and inner wall, Fig. 6 (not shown) and respectively overlapping circumferentially. Circumferentially overlapping elements 2 may be completely embedded; of the Fig. 4 configuration, or channel shaped Fig. 5 (not shown) with the side limbs of the overlapping channels directed towards each other. Alternatively, the tube may comprise alternate segments of each material extending completely through the tube wall, Fig. 7 (not shown), or the second material 2 may be of the Fig. 9 configuration and disposed on the inner or outer wall, or embedded therebetween. The tube of Fig. 1 is extruded from a die, Fig. 8, in which the first material is delivered from a screw extruder to an annular die outlet 12, via a passage 15a and openings 27 in a spider 25 supporting the die mandrel 14. The second material is delivered from another screw extruder, via an annular chamber 16b and circumferentially spaced rectangular openings 17, to the outer periphery of the first material being delivered to the outlet 12. The die arrangements for extruding the other tube embodiments are described. The die is heated by electrical elements 31. A vent passage 30 extends from atmosphere, via the spider legs and to the extruded tube interior through the mandrel 14. The outer outlet defining member 13 is radially adjustable by bolts 22a. The tube is cooled downstream of the outlet from which it is drawn, and optionally through a sizing device, by an endless traction mechanism. Where the tube is elastomeric, it may be cured in an autoclave, or by passage from the die through a salt bath, e.g. at 80 C.
