Abstract
1392492 Refining metal melts GEORG FISCHER AG 17 May 1972 [18 May 1971] 23275/72 Heading C7D A reaction vessel 1 consists of a reaction space 101 and a chamber 102 which contains a vaporizable substance 5, the space 101 and chamber 102 being separated by a wall 4 having passages 7 and 8 so that as the space 101 is filled with the melt 3, the portion of the melt 3 which enters passage 8 reacts with the substance 5 which gives off a gas through the passages 7 and 8 which reacts with the metal melt which by now has completely covered wall 4. The entrance of the melt 3 into the chamber 102 may be delayed by inserting plugs (39) (40) Fig. 3 (not shown), which melt or are destroyed after coming into contact with the melt 3 or by covering the passages with a removable refractory cover member (48) Fig. 4 (not shown), which is raised when the metal is required to react with the substance (51). The reactive substance, for example unalloyed magnesium, is inserted into the chamber 102 through a plug 6 and the melt may be discharged through an opening (28) Fig. 2 (not shown), or through a channel (65) Fig. 5 (not shown), which may also be used to fill the space 101 with melt. The treatment of iron melts with magnesium is referred to.
