Abstract

1395572 Methin dyes AGFA-GEVAERT AG 25 April 1972 [29 April 1971] 19134/72 Heading C4P [Also in Division G2] Methin dyes for sensitizing electrophotographic photoconductive layers (see Division G2) are of formula in which D is one of the formulµ E is H, an aliphatic or aryl group, or a group listed for D; R1, R4 and R6 are each cycloalkyl, aryl or optionally substituted aliphatic; R2 is an aliphatic or aryl group; R7 is H, -OR9, -NR10R11 or -SR9; R3, R9, R10 and R11 are each H or an aliphatic or aryl group; R5 is phenyl which may be substituted by one or more alkyl, alkoxy or halogen groups; R8 is H, -OR9 or -SR9; Z completes an optionally substituted benzene ring; Y is O or S; Q completes a heterocyclic group containing a 5 or 6- membered ring; n is 1 or 2; m is 0 or 1; q is 1 or 2; W is an anion or is absent. The dyes are prepared by conventional condensation reactions. In specified dyes: R1 is methyl, butyl or sulphopropyl; R2 is methyl, butyl or propyl; R3 is H or methyl; R4 is methyl or ethyl; R5 is phenyl; R6 is methyl; R5 is phenyl or methoxy- or chloro-phenyl; R7 is H, carboxymethoxy, methoxy, dimethylamino or (methyl) (ethoxyphenyl)amino; R8 is H, carboxymethoxy or methylthio, E is H, methyl, phenyl or completes a symmetrical or unsymmetrical trinuclear dye; Q completes a symmetrical dye or a benzothiazole, 6-nitrobenzothiazole, 3-phenyl-1,2,4- thiadiazole, 5-phenylbenzoxazole or 3,3-dimethylindole nucleus.
