Abstract

139,597. Young, B. Feb. 26, 1919. Stationary batch-mixers with rotary stirrers; continuous discharge apparatus with stationary containers.-Mixing and sifting apparatus, of the type in which a revolving brush 4 with spirally-arranged bristles c works over a semi-cylindrical sieve 3 through which the powdered substances pass into a lower receptacle 11 fitted with revolving helical mixing-blades 14, is provided with an additional mixing- device and with means whereby the contents of this mixer may be passed to the sifting-apparatus below when desired. As shown, the additional mixer comprises a trough 2 mounted above the sieve 3 and fitted with a rotary shaft 5 having helical blades 6 secured adjuatably thereto by means of pins b and nuts. A helical crushing-roller 10 on the shaft 5 works over the outlet grating 7, which is fitted with a sliding door 8 operated by means of a handle 8. The shaft 13 of the lower mixer carries a wheel 16 gearing with a wheel which is mounted on a sleeve carried by the driving-pulley 24. The brush 4 is driven by wheels 19, 20 from the wheel 16, the wheel 19 being carried by a pivoted arm 22 provided with a fixing-screw 23, so that the wheel 19 can be disengaged from the wheels 16, 20. A partition 30 may be arranged at one end of the receptacles 2, 4a, so that substances to be mixed may be crushed on a grate 33 by a helical roller 31 on the shaft 5 and pass direct to the lower mixer 11. The shafts of the brush 4 and blades 14 are adjustable by means of screws 35, 34 respectively. Slots 50, 51, 52 may be provided in the upper and lower end frames A, A<1> and trough 2, so that by removing the upper structure and the bearings of the shafts 5, 4, 13, the shafts can be removed from the machine. The shaft 5 is driven through wheels 41, 42 from the wheel 20, the wheel 41 being carried by a lever 44 so that it can be disengaged from the wheel 42 when desired. The whole apparatus can be raised or lowered by means of the feet 36 to allow a vehicle to be placed beneath the receptacle 11 to receive the substances discharged through the outlet 38. According to the Provisional Specification, the substances may be delivered from the apparatus into a receptacle in which elevator buckets travel, and spraying-devices may be arranged to supply moisture to the mixture.
