Abstract
1401873 Semi-permeable membranes TEIJIN LTD 13 Sept 1972 [13 Sept 1971 8 Feb 1972] 42578/72 Heading B1X [Also in Division C3] Osmosis, reverse osmosis or dialysis is carried out using a membrane consisting subtantially of (1) a linear polymer composed of recurring units of the general formula H-, m is zero or 1, Ar 1 represents an aromatic group which has up to 15 carbon atoms, and is trivalent in formula (1) and tetravalent in formula (2), the two nitrogen atoms shown in each ring are bonded to two adjacent nuclear carbon atoms of the group Ar 1 ; and Ar 2 and Ar 3 represent monovalent aromatic groups having up to 15 carbon atoms, the units of formulae (1) and/or (2) being bonded together directly or by divalent organic groups, said organic groups having on average not more than 80 atoms each, exclusive of carbon atoms, and having carbon atoms located at both ends thereof bonded to the units of formulae (1) and/or (2); (2) the parameter (Hp) of hydrophilic property, expressed by the following formula, of said linear polymer is at least 0.4: wherein N H is the number of hydrogen-bonding units contributed by polar groups in the entire polymer and is expressed by the product of the number (N A ) of hydrogen-bonding groups in the entire polymer and their hydrogen-bonding strength (G V ); and N I is the number of ionic groups in the entire polymer, with the proviso that the number of ionic groups does not exceed 1 per 500 units of molecular weight of the polymer; (3) the linear polymer being one which can be dissolved so as to form a solution containing at least 7% by weight of a polymer, in at least one of the following solvents: (1) N,N-dimethylacetimide, N-methyl pyrrolidone, dimethylsulfoxide and hexamethylphosphoramide, (2) mixtures of the solvents specified in (1) and (3) solvents specified in (1) and (2) containing up to 5% by weight of lithium chloride. The membrane may be a selfsupporting film, a coating on a porous plate, or a hollow fibre. The membrane may be used for desalination of sea-water, purification of industrial or radioactive wastes, other separations or concentrations or for ordinary or electro-dialysis.
