Abstract

1401876 Block homopolymers of butadiene CHEMISCHE WERKE HULS AG 24 Nov 1972 [26 Nov 1971] 54363/72 Heading C3P A block homopolymer of 1,3-butadiene which consists of a block A with an irregular distribution of vinyl groups and a block B with a regular distribution of vinyl groups, the weight ratio of A to B being 20 : 80 to 95 : 5, and which has an average content of vinyl groups in the whole homopolymer of 15, to 75% is produced by subjecting 1,3-butadiene to adiabatic polymerization in an inert organic diluent in the presence of a catalyst system of (a) an organolithium compound in amount of from 0À01 to 0À1% by weight relative to the butadiene and (b) a Lewis base, effective as a cocatalyst with an organolithium compound for butadiene polymerization (e.g. ethers and amines), in an amount of 0À01 to 10% by weight relative to the butadiene, the polymerization being initiated at a temperature from 30‹ to 110‹ C. and being completed at a temperature above 155‹ C. but not above 250‹ C. such that 20 to 95% of the total butadiene polymerized is polymerized before a temperature of 155‹ C. is reached. In the examples butadiene is polymerized isothermally and adiabatically to final temperatures below and above 155‹ C. in heptane using n butyl lithium and ethyleneglycol dimethyl ether as catalyst. The resultant rubber is compounded with vulcanizing ingredients and vulcanized.
