Abstract
1401907 Blasting; brushing SOC NATIONALE DES POUDRES ET EXPLOSIFS 17 May 1973 [23 May 1972] 23627/73 Heading B3D Apparatus for surface finishing the inside of large cylindrical bodies comprises means 3 for mounting a cylindrical body 1 with its axis horizontal, means 5, 5a for rotating the body about its axis, an elongated beam 19 having its longitudinal axis substantially parallel to that of the body, the beam being movable in a direction parallel to the axis of the body and receivable within the cylinder, and a machining component 24 on the end of the beam receivable in the body. The body 1, such as a propellant casing, has a closed end 1a and an open end 1b and is carried by supports 3 on a cradle 2 with its open end 1b in a sand-blasting booth. The body is contacted by a pair of shafts 5, 5a driven by a chain 7 from a motor 8 to effect rotation of the body. A carriage 12 is supported by wheels 11 on rails 10 parallel to the axis of the body 1 and is movable along the rails by a motor 39 connected to the wheels 11. The carriage supports a pair of horizontal shafts 13, 14 placed one above the other. The upper shaft 13 has sprockets 15, 15a connected by chains 17, 18 to sprockets on the lower shaft 14. The chains at one side carry the beam 19 and at the other side a counterweight 20 and the shaft 14 is connected to a motor 22 operation of which causes vertical adjustment of the beam. The beam extends forwardly towards the body 1 and carries a counterweight 23 on a rearward extension. The forward end of the beam has an abrasive spraying head 24 or nozzle pivotally mounted on a pole (26, Fig. 5, not shown) extending from the beam. A probe 27 on the carriage co-operates with a template 28 on a support 29 which causes pivoting of the head 24 as it reaches the curved end 1a of the body. The end of the beam may have a U-shaped support 30 to carry an operator in a sitting or recumbent position. The beam 19, Fig. 7, may have a brush 32 for cleaning the body by direct contact, a flexible tube 34 for manual sand-blasting, an auxiliary tube 33 for manual sand blasting, a compressed air tube 35, a flexible tube 36 for supplying the operator’s helmet with air, a flexible tube 37 for automatic sand-blasting connected to the blasting nozzle 24, and electric cables 38 providing an alarm system, lighting, microphone and headphones. Used abrasive falls from the body 1 into a hopper 41 and a spiral conveyer 42 feeds a bucket conveyer 43 leading to a reservoir above a feed aperture for the machine.
