Abstract
1402191 Drying timber HAGER AB 21 Feb 1973 [22 Feb 1972] 8521/73 Heading D1P Wood is dried by contacting it at 50 to 90‹C with a hot liquid, (of boiling point 180 to 250‹C) under reduced pressure so as to evaporate the water. Preferably the liquid is imiscible with water. Distilled liquid is condensed, seperated from the water and returned to the chamber containing the wood. Bubbles of steam form in the liquid so that a small quantity is sufficient to surround the wood. The liquid is preferably a petroleum fraction. Alternatively dichlorobenzene, dichloropropane or tetralin may be used or dichlorobenzene or dichloropropane added to the petroleum fraction to lower its flash point. Shellsol T (RTM) a petroleum fraction having a boiling point range of 187 to 212‹C and a flash point of 55‹C. In the example 50 mm pineboards were dried with shellsol T at 80‹C for 4 hrs at a pressure that decreased from 120mm to 80mm. The pressure was then reduced to 40mm for 90 minutes to distill liquid absorbed by the wood. Wax, a bleaching agent, a resin, linseed oil, a fire-retardant and/or a colouring material may be added to the liquid.
