Abstract

1414090 Brake – lining wear indicators S JAYE and J D ERICKSON 25 July 1973 [22 Aug 1972] 35322/73 Heading F2E A brake lining 18 of a brake (e.g. a disc brake or internal shoe-drum brake) incorporates an electric probe assembly 30 which upon a predetermined degree of wear of the lining 18 is exposed to a braking surface (e.g. a disc or drum) of the brake to thereby complete an electrical circuit to energize a warning device (e.g. a light); the probe assembly 30 has its conductive part 38 formed of relative soft metallic material, specifically solder, to eliminate scoring damage to the braking surface. The embodiment shown illustrates a shoe drum brake wherein each shoe 10, 12 includes three probe assemblies 30 interconnected by conductors 42 to a single conductor leading to a control box 44. Each probe assembly 30 comprises a plastics tubular sleeve 34 screw-threaded into the lining 18. The interior of the sleeve 34 which is internally threaded, is filled with molten solder 38 which hardens therein. A screw fastener 40 is then threaded into the solder 38 for connection with conductor 42. The control box 44 is connected to the vehicle ignition switch so that electrical energy is only supplied when the ignition switch is on. The control box 44 connects with warning lights 56 corresponding in number with the number of brake assemblies on the vehicle by means of disconnectible male and female plug assemblies 54, 52. Each light 56 is provided with a flasher unit 58 and a holding relay 64; the coil 66 thereof when energized will move a bridging member 68 into bridging contact with points 70, 72 for maintaining the circuit through the flasher unit 58 after the circuit has been established when the probe assembly 30 contacts the drum 28.
