Abstract
1414829 Settling apparatus THAMES WATER AUTHORITY 19 Dec 1973 [7 June 1973] 27196/73 Heading B1D A settling apparatus comprises at least one settling tank (1) (Fig. 1, not shown) having rotary sludge scrapers and connected to sludge-receiving chamber 10 by gravity-flow pipe 7 provided with valve 11 which is closed when the sludge level in compartment 9 reaches mercury float switch 23. The chamber 10 is divided into two compartments 9, 10 by partition 13 provided with adjustable orifice 14 and adjustable weir 15. To remove sludge from sump (16) of tank (1), valve 11 is opened by actuator 20 under the control of a timer (not shown) and the sludge flows from pipe 7 through compartment 9, orifice 14, and compartment 12 to pipe 19. The sludge flow rate in pipe 7 gradually increases due to a viscosity decrease and as a result the sludge level in compartment 9 rises. When it reaches switch 23, preferably positioned at the level of weir 15, the valve 11 is closed after a timed delay. When there is more than one settling tank sludge is removed from each tank in turn.
