Abstract
1414915 Brake noise reduction; brake pads; disc brakes SOC ANON FRANCAISE DU FERODO 7 Feb 1973 [7 Feb 1972] 6088/73 Heading F2E A brake assembly comprises a rotatable element having a braking surface thereon and means for mounting opposite to that surface a brake shoe comprising a composite sandwich structure including a rigid support plate, a brake lining adapted to be brought into contact with the braking surface, a flat damping element of heat-resistant material having visco-elastic properties adapted to damp a predetermined frequency of vibration of the brake shoe, a covering element adjacent to the damping element and having steel- or aluminium-like elastic properties, and resilient means operatively located between a lateral edge of the brake shoe and the mounting means and having a stiffness such as to channel the frequency of audible shoe vibrations into a narrow range approaching the predetermined frequency, thereby reducing noise. As shown in Fig. 1, where a friction lining 12 is carried by a rigid backing plate 13, e.g. of steel, a damping element 14 composed of rubbercovered asbestos fibres is located next to the backing plate and a covering element 15 of steel or aluminium is located next to element 14. All four components are secured together by adhesion, and the unit is accommodated in a fixed housing having bearing surfaces A, B, Figs. 2 and 3, to take up the braking reaction. The resilient means is a corrugated metal spring blade 17. Alternatively the resilient means may be a block of the material used for element 14. In Fig. 4 (not shown), damping element 14 and covering element 15 are located between the backing plate 13 and friction lining 12. In Fig. 5, a damping element 14 is glued to each edge of backing plate 13 and a covering element 15 is glued to each element 14.
