Abstract

1420934 Gas-turbine engine combustion equipment R N PENNY 21 March 1973 [22 March 1972] 13299/72 Heading F1L [Also in Division F4] A fuel vapourizer has a duct 2, which may be located between a compressor 3 (or heat exchanger) and a turbine 4 of a gas-turbine engine, a flame holder 1 transversely located in duct 2 to create a region of reduced pressure in which vapourized fuel, vapourized in the vicinity of holder 1 by heat from combustion of the fuel, can be ignited and burn in an oxidant stream passing through duct 2, the flame holder 1 communicating with a region external to said duct whereby the rate of fuel vaporization can be controlled by controlling the heat transfer along the flame holder 1 to said external region which is supplied with coolant fluid at a rate controlled by a valve 16 in said external region. The flame holder may comprise an elongate member or a plurality of parallel, closely-spaced elongate members. The or each such member may be a tube communicating at one end with a semi-annular chamber 10 supplied with cold air and having a distributer 15 whereby the air flows through the tubes into a semi-annular chamber 11. Alternatively, the or each elongate member may comprise a solid rod, or a sealed tube containing coolant fluid with the ends of the or each rod or tube located in an annular chamber through which cooling air is passed. In a further form, Figs. 4, 5 (not shown), the flame holder is a disc of heat-conductive porous material, such as metallic sponge or ceramic, with its periphery in an annular cooling chamber. The compressor 3 supplies the cooling air to the valve 16 which is operated by an actuator 26 responsive to a temperature sensor 25.
