Abstract
1421292 Continuous casting VEREINIGTE OSTERREICHISCHE EISEN UND STAHLWERKE AG 1 Feb 1973 [3 Feb 1972] 5166/73 Heading B3F A pouring tube for passing molten metal into a mould, e.g. for casting steel, has a head 4 intended to be immersed in the receiving vessel and having at least one vertical outlet 8 or 9 connected to the bore 7 by a lateral passageway 10. A pouring tube blank 1 is shown and this requires boring to produce the passageway 10, the resulting hole 11 through the wall being subsequently closed by a plug 13 with a screwthread 12 or by a rammed mass of refractory material. The blank is formed by pressing plastic refractory material in a die incorporating mandrels or by casting pasty refractory material in a mould with cores. In either case the material is eventually fired. For slab casting there may be a vertical outlet at each corner of a rectangular sectioned head of a pouring tube or there may be two tubes on opposite sides of the mould axis. The metal flow, directed by a tube, flushes inclusions, up to a slag layer at the surface.
