Abstract

1421360 Ferroelastic crystals E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 21 Dec 1973 [26 Dec 1972] 59334/73 Heading BIG [Also in Divisions Cl and H4] A ferroelastic crystal having a domain wall extending across the crystal in a zig zag configuration and partitioning the crystal into first and second ferroelastic domains having different strain states is made by applying a shear stress to such a crystal under conditions which inhibit planar domain wall formation. By ferroelastic is meant a crystal which has two or more spontaneous strain orientation states in the absence of mechanical stress but can be changed from one orientation state to another by mechanical stress. The crystal may also be a coupled ferroelectric/ferroelastic material exhibiting uniaxial electric polarisation. Specified materials are α-lead phosphate and materials of the formula, wherein R and R’ represent scandium, yttrium or a rare earth element of atomic number from 57 to 71, x is 0 to 1.0 and e is from 0 to 0.2 e.g. #’gadolinium molybdate. The crystal having the zig zag configuration is preferably obtained by clamping portions of the crystal adjacent opposite faces to prevent deformation of the crystal in the clamped regions and to provide an unclamped central region having boundaries parallel to a twinning plane and applying an increasing shear stress to the crystal until one or more domain walls having a zigzag configuration appear in the unclamped region. Suitable apparatus is shown in the figure wherein C-cut crystal 10 having faces 16, 16′, 16″ and 16″‘ cut parallel to the (110) planes is clamped 11, by an adhesive along one portion 18 of crystal face 17 and a movable clamp 12 is cemented along an opposition portion 18′ of the same crystal face 17 so that the edges 19 and 19’ of the clamps are parallel to (110) planes. Desired pressure is then applied to clamp 12 by screw 13, to form zig zag walls 14 and 15. Another method of forming the walls is illustrated in Figure 5 (not shown).
