Abstract
1432555 Power steering BURMAN & SONS Ltd 24 Aug 1973 [8 Sept 1972 14 Dec 1972] 41764/72 and 57799/72 Heading B7H In a power assisted steering gear the resistance to relative movement between a pair of valve members, controlling a fluid-pressure actuated steering device, is made responsive to vehicle speed. As shown in Fig. 1, relatively rotational valve members 13, 14, which control fluid to a piston and cylinder unit (not shown) forming part of a rack and pinion steering gear 10, 11, are interconnected by a torsion bar 15 which has a recess 16 which may be engaged by the inner end 19 of a plunger 17 which is mounted in a housing 20 formed in the valve member 14. A supply of hydraulic fluid is arranged to be supplied by a hydraulic pump, whose pressure is dependant on vehicle road speed, to act on the head 18 of plunger 17 so that at a predetermined road speed the inner end 19 engages with recess 16 thus effectively shortening the torsion bar length so that greater resistance will now be offered to the relative rotation of the valve members 13, 14. The outer end of valve member 13 is connectible to a driver rotatable shaft (not shown) and the inner end of valve member 14 forms an extension of pinion 10. In an alternative arrangement a solenoid actuated valve is made responsive to a dynamo electric machine whose rotational speed is representative of vehicle speed, and the solenoid valve controls the application of fluid pressure controlling the plunger 17. Also, the fluid pressure for such resistance may be supplied from a pressure line carrying operating fluid to the steering gear from the engine driven pump thus abolishing the need for a further pump.
