1439172 Oxychlorination catalyst IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 19 Dec 1973 [9 Jan 1973] 52828/74 Divided out of 1439171 Heading B1E An oxychlorination catalyst which is an intimate mixture of the oxides of Mg, Al and Cu with the proportion of MgO in the range of 0.25-2 moles per mole of Al 2 O 3 is prepared by forming the Al 2 O 3 by calcination of a precursor thereof in the presence of a precursor of MgO. The preferred range is 0.9-1.1 moles per mole of Al 2 O 3 and the content of spinel structure is preferably not more than 40%, particularly not more than 25%. The catalyst advantageously contains 1-50, especially 3-15, atomic proportions of Cu per 100 atomic proportions of Mg. It may be prepared by precipitating Al and Mg hydrated oxides from an aqueous solution of their salts, drying and calcining at 300-700‹C to form the mixed oxide which is treated with a solution of a Cu salt and finally calcined again at 300-700‹C. Preferably a mixed MgO/Al 2 O 3 is treated with a cupric salt solution.
