Abstract

1441963 Shearing; punching ETAT FRANCAIS 15 June 1973 [26 June 1972 11 Jan 1973] 16208/73 Heading B3W A method of effecting rupture of a metal member and separation of parts of the member so ruptured comprises subjecting the member to pure shearing stresses resulting from explosion of a charge having a mass energy of at least 100 joules/gram and α detonation velocity of at least 3000 metres/sec., the charge being housed in a housing, at least part of one wall of which provides a surface on which gases available on explosion of the charge can act in effecting rupture and separation of parts of the metal member, which surface is provided either by surface of the metal member or by a surface of a displaceable member which bears at a forward surface thereof directly or indirectly on a surface of the metal member, the quantity of the explosive charge being such that the volume initially available to said gases is not more than half the volume available when said rupture and separation of parts is achieved. In a circuit breaker, Fig. 1, a metal member 10 to be sheaved comprising a hollow cylinder 10A screwed on a terminal 2 and a cylinder 10B frictionally engaging a contact portion 70 of a terminal 1, grooves 11, 12 forming a plane of weakness at the desired shearing plane. Explosive charge 14 and detonator 15 are housed in a recess 13. To interrupt normal flow of current between terminals 1 and 2 a firing current is supplied to the detonator, shearing occurs along the plane 11-12 and the portion 10B is driven against a lead cylinder 17, causing plastic or permanent deformation of the cylinder. In a second embodiment of circuit breaker (Fig. 2, not shown) a punch (26) and an insulating pad (27) are interposed between the open side of the charge housing (23) and a portion (28a) of a metal plate (28) which constitutes a calibrated fuse, a row of perforations (30) defining opposed edges of the fuse. The plate (28) extends out of opposed slots in a cover (29) screwed to a body (21) in which a member (32) housing the charge (25) is mounted. When current is supplied to an explosive wire of detonator (24) the fuse portion is sheared from the plate, the insulating pad (27) being moved to span the gap in the plate (28). The face of the pad (27) adjacent the fuse is preferably covered with metal sheet or foil. The sheared fuse portion (28a) may eventually contact two further terminals and so close a control or measuring circuit. A bolt or cable cutter, Fig. 3a comprises a cylinder 41 with opposed openings for the cable &c. and a piston 52 formed with a tapered blade 55 shaped to embrace the cable &c. and coacting with a similar fixed blade 57. An explosive charge 50 of lead nitrate and pentrite is housed in a ring 51 opening on to an exploding wire detonator 48 at one side and the rear face of the piston on the other.
