Abstract
1442290 Hydroxylation of phenols and phenol ethers BAYER AG 6 March 1975 [6 March 1974] 9345/75 Heading C2C The invention comprises a process for the hydroxylation in the nucleus of a phenol (excluding unsubstituted phenol itself) or a phenol ether wherein a phenol (excluding unsubstituted phenol itself) or a phenol ether is reacted initially with substantially anhydrous hydrogen peroxide, wherein the reaction is carried out in the presence of an acid having a pKa value of #4À76 at 25‹ C. and wherein the resulting phenol or phenol ether hydroxylated in the nucleus is recovered. The acid is preferably one which is inert under the reaction conditions. The hydrogen peroxide may be dissolved in an anhydrous solvent. The reaction is preferably carried out at from 20‹ to 150‹ C. and may be carried out in the presence of a stabilizer.
