Abstract
1444790 Vehicle door safety devices NISSAN MOTOR CO Ltd 31 Dec 1973 [30 Dec 1972 (2)] 60287/73 Heading B7J In a motor vehicle having a side door 10 connected to the body door post 16 by a hinge 14, the door is prevented from moving laterally externally of the vehicle in the event of the hinge breaking as a result of a frontal collision, by means of a rigid safety member 22 secured to the door 10 on the same side edge wall 10c as the hinge 14, the member 22 having a portion extending through a hole 24 in the body door post 16 to prevent outward movement of the door under the collision condition but to allow the door to be moving to the open position under normal conditions. A cup-like reinforcing member 26 is secured around the hole and the portion of the member 22 enters the hole through an elastic sealing member 28. In another embodiment the rigid safety member passes through the door wall 10c and is carried by a reinforcing member secured to the inside of the wall 10c. According to a further embodiment, a rigid safety member on the door post enters a hole in a rigid member secured to the door wall 10c. In a still further embodiment a plate-like rigid safety member is secured to the inside wall of the door and abuts the inside wall of the door post if the door moves externally laterally in a collision but can swing clear thereof when the door is opened in the normal manner.
