Abstract
1447039 Hand-brake levers; transmitting mechanism NEATE BRAKE CONTROLS Ltd 19 Sept 1973 [21 Sept 1972] 43798/72 Heading F2E Brake-actuating apparatus for a vehicle comprising a base 1, Fig. 1, an operating lever 7 pivotally mounted thereon, a rack 2 mounted on the base for lengthwise movement and connectible at 5 to a brake, an operating pawl 9 pivotally mounted on the operating lever and engageable with the rack so that when a constant moment is applied to the operating lever in the brake-applying direction and the operating pawl is engaged with the rack, the component of force acting on the rack in its direction of movement increases towards the end of the stroke of the operating lever, further includes a holding pawl 14 automatically engageable with the rack to hold the brake on when the lever is released, a part of or on the operating lever (e.g. the operating pawl) being engageable with the holding pawl to move it out of engagement with the rack when lever 7 is moved to the extremity of its return stroke. As shown in Fig. 1, rack 2 is moved to the right in guides 3, 4, on back plate 1 to apply the brake by repeated clockwise movement of operating lever 7. Spring-loaded operating pawl 9 performs the rack-moving function, while spring-loaded holding pawl 14 holds the rack on each return movement of the lever. On movement of lever 7 further left from the solid-line position shown, the interaction of leg 12 of pawl 9 and pawl 14 raises both pawls from the rack, permitting the brake-release springs (not shown) to release the brakes. Fig. 2 resembles Fig. 1, but the lever 7 operates as a first-order lever pivoted above the rack and the operating direction is counterclockwise. Gradual release of the brakes, e.g. for hillstarts or for positioning a trailer on an incline may be effected with the construction of Fig. 3. From any given position of lever 7, the lever is moved slightly to the right to relieve the pressure on holding pawl 14. Thereafter, push button 18 is depressed to raise pawl 14 by rod 19, release link 20, rocker arm 22 and push rod 24.
