Abstract

1447530 Shaft couplings; change-speed gear REGIE NATIONALE DES USINES AUTOMOBILES RENAULT and AUTOMOBILES PEUGEOT 23 Nov 1973 [24 Nov 1972] 54539/73 Headings F2U and F2D A drum 3, 3a or 14 for an epicyclic transmission is crenellated in transverse section and has a set of abutments 12 or 121 formed by upsetting the surface adjacent apertures 34, the axial extent of the apertures being smaller than that of the upset walls. For the drums 3 and 3a the abutments 12 act as stops for the clutch plates when these are moved axially by pistons 8 and 23. For the drum 14 the abutments 121 position the ring gear 15. The abutments may be punched before or during assembly and may be V or U-shaped in cross-section. The transmission shown includes first and second clutches 2, 22 and first and second brakes 25, 31 and are operated by pistons 8, 23, 26 and 32 respectively to transmit from the shaft 1 to the shaft 19 three forward speeds and a reverse speed. The first speed is obtained by operating the first clutch 2 with the second brake 31 so that the drive is through the drum 3 and 14 and gearwheels 15, 16, 27 and 33 with the drum 30 for the planetary carrier 29 braked. The second speed is obtained by operating the first clutch 2 with the first brake 25 so that the drive is through the drums 3 and 14 and gearwheels 15 and 16. The third speed is obtained by operating the first and second clutches 2, 22 and the reverse speed is obtained by operating the second clutch 22 with the second brake 31.
