Abstract
1447743 Powder coating composition FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 5 Dec 1974 [5 Dec 1973] 52684/74 Headings C3B and C3P Powder paint compositions are prepared by the following process. (A) A solution in an inert solvent of a copolymer (M.W. 1000-15,000, glass trans. temperature 40-90 C.) having cross-linkable functional groups is introduced to an evaporating zone. (B) The solutuon is heated at a temperature > the melting point of the copolymer but < the degradation or gelling temperature. thereof and higher than the temperature at which the solvent begins to vaporize. (C) The solution is passed from the evaporating zone, while maintaining the temperature > the melting point of the copolymer, to a separating zone. In this zone the solvent vapour is removed to leave non-volatile components which latter are mechanically driven from the separating zone. The non-volatile material is cooled to a solid and then pulverized to form the powder paint composition. The first steps may take place in a plate evaporator, e.g. as disclosed in U.S. Sepecification 3,073,380. A drawing (not shown) illustrates a conical separator, having a tapered screw at the bottom thereof, suitable for the separation zone. Both the evaporating and separation zone may be maintained at 250-600 F. A reduced pressure may be maintained in the evaporating and separating zone, e.g. 10-500 mm.Hg. A pressure of 40-70 p.s.i. may be used to drive the non – volatiles from the separating zone. Examples relate to glycidyl acrylate copolymers cross-linked, e.g. with azelaic acid; acrylic acid, methacrylic acid copolymers cross-linked with epoxy resin (a diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A); a 2 – hydroxyethyl methacrylate / methacrylic acid / methyl methacrylate / butyl acrylate copolymer; and a 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate/ethyl acrylate/methyl methacrylate copolymer.
