Abstract
1462922 Indicating faults NIPPONDENSO CO Ltd and TOYOTA JIDOSHA KOGYO KK 23 May 1974 [2 June 1973] 23100/74 Heading G1U [Also in Division F2] A fault indicator includes a differential relay including two oppositely wound coils, one of which becomes de-energized on the occurrence of a fault, causing the field of the other coil to actuate a magnetic switch which operates an indicator and also short circuits the de-energized coil. Switch 9 is normally closed, thus coils 3, 4 are both energized and their fields cancel out leaving reed switch 5 open. On switch 9 opening, coil 3 is de-energized, and the field of coil 4 closes the switch 5 allowing current to flow through indicator lamp 8. A path is also closed through resistor 1, diode 7 and switch 5 which short-circuits the coil 3 such that if switch 9 now closes, e.g. through vibration, coil 3 remains de-energized. The bulb 8 is tested by connecting switch 14 to the positive supply, whereon transistor 12 conducts and the bulb should light. Other embodiments involve a delay between the occurrence of a fault and the opening of switch 9 to obviate response to spurious events Figs. 2, 3 (not shown) and modifications to utilize a normally open switch 9 Fig. 3 (not shown). The device may be used to indicate the low level of oil in a pan or a vehicle in which case preferably two reed-switches 9 are used in parallel and mounted at right-front and left-rear, these being operated by magnetic floats. Another embodiment is used to detect the wear of a brake pad lining Figs. 4, 5 (not shown). The test circuit is similar to the Fig. 1 embodiment except that switch 9 is omitted, the bottom end of the coil 3 being grounded and a wire embedded in the brake pad forms the connection between resistor 1 and coil 3. Thus if this point is grounded, coil 3 is de-energized and the circuit operates as before.
