Abstract
1466376 Steering column mountings CAM GEARS Ltd 6 May 1974 [24 May 1973] 25029/73 Heading B7H A breakaway mounting for a collapsible steering column includes two members adapted to be mounted on the vehicle and the column respectively, a holder on one member embracing a part of the other and the holder being deformable to allow disengagement of the members on vehicle impact. In one embodiment, Fig. 2, the holder 12 is formed by the metal plates 10, 8 mounted on a jacket 4 of the column, and surrounds a metal pin 20 of a connector 14 mounted on the vehicle, the pin 20 being positioned by a dowel 22. On frontal impact the inner column 2 telescopes and the force exerted on the jacket 4 causes the holder to open by deformation and release the pin. In another embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown) the pin and connector are integrally formed as a plate with a cylindrical enlargement along one edge. In a further embodiment (Fig. 5, not shown) the holder may be formed from a plastics bracket moulded on the column jacket. In yet another arrangement (Fig. 7, not shown) the holder is formed by a single spring steel U-clip, or a number of such clips, carried by a bracket on the jacket.
