Abstract
1466777 Treating textiles PENNWALT CORP 11 Oct 1974 [23 Oct 1973] 44184/74 Heading D1P A non-woven fabric is (1) bonded from an aqueous dispersion with 5-50% by weight of the dry bonded fabric of a binder comprising (a) a polymer of vinyl acetate or alkyl acrylate or methacrylate and (b) from 25-110% by weight, based on the weight of the polymer, of a halogen and/or phosphorous-containing flame retardant, and (2) impregnated from an aqueous bath with 0.05-0.8% by weight, based on the weight of the dry bonded fabric of a fluorine containing oil and water -repellent compound or polymer. In some examples the binder and flame retardant composition is applied to a cotton scrim, the scrim is sandwiched between cellulosic tissue sheets and the laminate pressed with a roller and dried. In example 6 the binder is applied to a wet-laid fabric of nylon, rayon and cellulose fibres. The flame retardant may be tricresyl phosphate, diphenyl cresyl phosphate, tributyl phosphate, trioctyl phosphate, tris (2-ethylhexyl) phosphate, tris (chloroethyl) phosphate, tris (dichloropropyl) phosphate, tris (dibromopropyl) phosphate or a chlorinated paraffin. Additionally, the aqueous bath of step (ii) may contain sufficient water-soluble fire-retardant salt, e.g. ammonium sulphate, sulphamate or bromide, mono or diammonium phosphate, borax or a boric acid salt, to deposit up to 6% of said salt on the fabric, based on the weight of the fabric. The alkyl group in the acrylate or methacrylate binder has 1 to 6 carbon atoms. The binder may be a copolymer comprising hydroxyl, amino, amido, sulphonate and carboxyl groups. The oil and water-repellent composition comprises an acrylate or methacrylate polymer comprising units derived from a C 6 -C 6 fluoroalkyl acrylate or methacrylate, or from an acrylate or methacrylate monomer of the formula: R f SO 2 N(C 2 H @ )CH 2 CH 2 OOC(R)C = CH 2 or R f CH 2 CH 2 SOC(R)C=CH 2 , where R f is a perfluoroalkyl group of at least 4 carbon atoms and R is H or CH 3 , or a chromium coordination complex of a perfluoroalkylcontaining carboxylic acid.
