Abstract
1466798 Magnetic coatings BASF AG 16 April 1974 [17 April 1973] 16422/74 Heading B2E [Also in Division C3] A non-magnetic disc, e g. of optionally anodized Al or Al alloy, is coated on one or both sides with a polished, hard pigmentcontaining resin, and then with a magnetic coating composition which comprises a finelydivided magnetic pigment in a binder comprising volatile organic solvent(s) and a mixture of, by weight, 60-70% (A) an epoxy resin, 10-30% (B) a resole, and 10-30% (C) an etherified melamineformaldehyde resin, where (A) is a solid curable bisphenol-A/epichlorohydrin resin of epoxy E.W. 400-2500, with m.p. 50-150‹C, (B) is a curable allyloxybenzene/formaldehyde condensate with free or etherified methylol groups, with M.W. <1000, and (C) has >2 methylol groups etherified with n-butanol or isobutanol, with M.W. <2500. Also present may be 5-20%, based on (A + B + C), of polyvinyl methyl ether. Per part by weight of the binder there may be 0.5-3 parts magnetic pigment, e.g. Fe 3 O 4 or rod-shaped or acicular γ-Fe 2 O 3 , with av. particle size 0.1-2 Ám. Also present may be polysiloxane and non-magnetic powder of Moh hardness >6, with particle size 0.5-1.5Î the final magnetic coating thickness, e.g. corundum, non-magnetic Fe oxide, or B carbide. By wt based on (binder + magnetic pigment) there may be 100-150% solvent(s). Many solvents are specified. After coating, the magnetic coating is dried, cured at e.g. 150-300‹C, and ground or polished. The coating may be 1.5-4 Ám thick. The sub-coating composition may comprise Fe 2 O 3 , polysiloxane, epoxy resin electrocorundum, and solvents. The coating compositions may be applied by spraying on one or both sides of the slowly rotating/disc, which may be inclined, followed by rotating the disc at a higher speed to adjust the coating thickness.
