Abstract
1476473 Connecting pieces for space frame joints UNISTRUT CORP 20 May 1974 [24 May 1973] 22390/74 Heading E1K [Also in Division F2] A junction member for a building framework including an intermediate chord frame composed of horizontal struts 10, from the junction points of which diagonal struts 12 extend both upwardly and downwardly to upper and lower chord frames, is of the kind formed from pressed or fabricated steel plate, e.g. as described in Specification 838537, so as to provide alternately horizontal and inclined bearing portions for the struts 10, 12, respectively, each of which portions has a series of alternate lugs 17, 30 and apertures 19, 32 to engage corresponding apertures 14 and lugs 16 on the struts, wherein two such pressed or fabricated plate members 20, 22, Figs. 2 and 4, or 60, 80, Fig. 7, respectively, are secured together in back to back relationship to provide a composite junction member. The lower of the two plate members 22, 80, respectively, have on their horizontal bearing portions, in place of alternate lugs and apertures, a series of apertures 28, 88, respectively, which mate with the corresponding lugs and apertures 30 and 32, or 90 and 92, respectively, such that the lugs 30 or 90 enter the apertures 28 or 88 to a depth of about half the thickness of the plate material. By this means, horizontal struts 10 can be fitted to both upper and lower surfaces of the horizontal bearing portions of the composite plate structure, these struts being secured by bolts 34 and nuts 33. The inclined struts 12 are fitted to one side only of the inclined bearing portions of the plate members in similar fashion. In the embodiment of Fig. 7, each plate member is formed from a pair of plates 62, 64 or 82, 84 each slotted centrally for half their width so that they can be fitted together in crossed formation, and a base plate 66 or 86 having slots 68 or 96 into which tabs 67 or 94 on the respective pairs of plates 62, 64 or 82, 84 engage, the thus located plates 62, 64, 66 or 82, 84, 86 then being permanently secured by welding to form the plate members 60, 80, respectively.
