Abstract

1476945 Polyamides PHILLIPS PETROLEUM CO 29 Aug 1974 [31 Aug 1973] 37808/74 Heading C3R A linear polyamide contains at least 80 wt. per cent of securing units where R is 5-methylnonamethylene, 2,4-dimethyloctamethylene or 2,4,6-trimethylheptamethylene, at least 50% being 5-methylnonamethylene, any remaining units being where R1 is H or C 1-4 alkyl, R2 is a divalent C 6-16 hydrocarbon radical R3 is a divalent C 4-14 hydrocarbon radical, and if R1 is H and R2 is cyclic the group -NH-R2-NH is symmetrical about the axis through the NH groups, and contains less than 5 double bonds per 100 R groups, preferably less than 1 per 1000. The polyamides are useful for forming fibres or as moulding resins, for fibres the amount of plasticiser present, if any, is generally less than 2%. Examples illustrate the preparation of polymers from 1,4-cyclohexane dicarboxylio acid and a diamine mixture of about 89 wt. per per cent 5-methyl-nonamethylene and 11 % 2,4- dimethyloctamethylene diamines (I) without additives and (II) with acetic acid (M.W. modifier), manganese lactate (thermal stabilizer) and TiO 2 (delustrant). The polymers made with the specified diamine of the purity indicated by the low double bond content are stated to have low boiling water shrinking and good dyeability, crease recovery, wash wear properties and tenacity. Reference is made to Specification, 1,424,852 relating to similar terephthalamide polymers.
