Abstract

1486920 Optical brighteners HOECHST AG 20 Dec 1974 [20 Dec 1973] 55193/74 Headings C3P and C3R [Also in Division C2] Synthetic organic polymers are optically brightened with compounds of the formula wherein X and X1 are each COOMe or SO 3 Me where Me is H or a colourless cation, of functional derivatives thereof, the naphthalene nucleii may be substituted by further non- chromophoric substituents, other than 1,2-bis- (5 – cyanonaphthyl – 2) – ethylene. The optical brightening agent may be incorporated during the manufacture of the corresponding monomer or during the polymerization of the monomer or as an after-treatment of the polymer prior to shaping of the polymer. Specified polymers which may be optically brightened are conventional addition and condensation polymers. In examples, poly-ethylene terephthalate is either prepared from optically brightened bis- (# – hydroxyethyl)terephthalate or optically brightened during the polymerization of bis(#- hydroxyethyl)terephthalate, polyvinyl chloride powder and polystyrene granules are optically brightened during the formation of foils and plates.
