Abstract

1487631 Flame-resistant thermosetting resin compositions SUMITOMO BAKELITE CO Ltd 10 Sept 1974 [11 Sept 1973 (2) 14 Jan 1974 20 Feb 1974 (2)] 39425/74 Headings C3R and C3B [Also in Divisions C2 and B5] A flame-resistant thermosetting resin composition is derived from (i) a thermosetting resin selected from phenolic resins, epoxy resins, these resins modified with one another, and these resins modified with amino resins, and (ii) at least one compound of the general formula wherein R 1 and R 2 are selected from alkyl, aryl, alkoxy and aryloxy groups having up to 10 carbon atoms and which may have one or more halogen or hydroxyl substituent, R 3 represents a divalent aromatic radical, R 4 represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl or aryl group each having up to 10 carbon atoms, and n is 2-30. The compositions may be prepared by preparing the thermosetting resin and adding thereto at any stage of or after the production of the resin at least one of the said phosphorus compounds. The phosphorus compound may be previously reacted either with an epoxy compound having at least one epoxy group in the molecule, or with formaldehyde. The phenolic resins include phenol-formaldehyde resins optionally modified with drying oils, rubbers and aromatic hydrocarbons. The amino resins may be those prepared from formaldehyde and any one of urea, thiourea, melamine, a guanamine, e.g. benzoguanamine, acetoguanamine and formguanamine, or dicyandiamide. In the examples thermosetting resin compositions are prepared (1) by reacting a polyphosphate ester of the Formula II wherein n is 3, phenol, aqueous HCHO and NH 3 , and diluting the dehydrated product with acetone; (2) by mixing a phenol-HCHO resin with a polyphosphonic acid ester of the Formula III where n is 3, and acetone; or (3) by mixing a cresol-HCHO resin with the reaction product of a polyphosphate ester of the above Formula I wherein n is 4, and HCHO, then dehydrating the resulting mixture and then diluting with acetone. The resulting resin compositions are used to impregnate sheets of Kraft paper which are formed into laminates with a copper foil on one side of the assembly, by heat pressing. Uses.-Laminates, moulding compounds, electrical insulating materials, adhesives.
