Abstract
1487813 Controlling fuel injection NIPPONDENSO CO Ltd and TOYOTA JIDOSHA KOGYO KK 6 Feb 1975 [24 June 1974] 5164/75 Heading F1B An internal combustion engine 100, has an intake pipe 160, intake ports 150 communicated with engine cylinders 110 and intake valves 140 in the intake ports. Fuel is injected intermittently to each cylinder 110 via nozzles 600 from a meter 400 (mounted on the intake pipe and responsive to engine operation conditions) for periods which extend beyond the instant when each intake valve 140 closes. The fuel is distributed to the nozzles 600 via a rotary distributer 500 which has means (not shown in Fig. 1) to advance the time in the cycle at which fuel is injected adjacent each valve 140 as engine speed increases. Fuel metering. Fuel from a tank 200 is delivered through a pressure regulating valve 330 to the chamber 481 of a constant differential pressure valve 480 mounted on the meter 400. The meter includes a suction-operated spring-biased piston 432 which responds to intake pipe suction and moves a metering needle 440 (with a tapering groove 441 that co-operates with a sleeve 460 longitudinally, to vary the amount of fuel passing from the chamber 481 to a space inside a sleeve 460. The sleeve 460 is also spring-biased and moved longitudinally by a device 471 sensitive to fuel temperature. Outlet control ports 463 in the sleeve co-operate with an outlet duct 422 to meter the fuel according to engine temperature, which then passes through the other chamber 482 of the constant differential pressure valve 480 to a distributer 500. Distributer and injection timing advance. The distributer 500, Fig. 2, has a central shaft 520 rotated at ¢ crank-shaft speed and is hollow at one end 522 to receive fuel which is delivered through four delivery apertures (of which only two 502, 503 are shown) to four injector nozzles 600. Around the shaft 520 is a rotatable sleeve 530 with four apertures (of which only two 531, 532 are shown) each aperture constituting 90 degrees of the sleeve circumference and each co-operating with one of the delivery apertures 502, 503. The sleeve 530 is rotated with respect to the distributer body 501 to advance fuel delivery time in the engine operating cycle by means of a linkage 540 incorporating a cam-follower 545 operated by a 3-dimensional cam 552. The cam’s axial position is determined by governor weights 554 and hence engine speed, while its radial position is determined by a lever 560 operated in tandem with the engine throttle valve.
