Abstract
1487890 Controlling light RANK ORGANISATION Ltd 24 March 1976 [9 April 1975] 14545/75 Heading G2F [Also in Division G5] An electro-optical cell, e.g. for a nematic liquid crystal display, comprises two walls spaced by conducting or insulating spacing elements bonded to adhesive which can be softened, e.g. by heat, so as to seal the cell while the thickness of the spacing elements determines the spacing. If conducting elements 6 are formed on the inner face of one wall in the form of 7 bar displays as in Fig. 4, opposing a conducting film on the inner face of the other wall, the metallic spacer elements 3 may be bonded to a thermoplastic layer 4, e.g. by application to the layer as a printed circuit, to make contact where they are interrupted by window 5 with the conducting elements, while an additional element 3 (not shown) contacts the opposing conducting film. When layer 4 is softened by heat it seals the cell and allows elements 3 to set the spacing at their own thickness. Alternatively, if other means provide connection, the spacer may be a high melting point thermoplastic film coated, e.g. from a chloroform solution Fig. 6 (not shown) with lower melting point layers, so that the cell may be sealed by heating to soften these layers, Fig. 5 (not shown).
