Abstract
1487914 ‘Sand type’ filter B O C INTERNATIONAL Ltd 26 Sept 1974 [2 Oct 1973] 46031/73 Heading B1D A downward flow filter bed comprises at least two layers of particles whose densities increase and whose size decrease from one layer to the next downwards and a bottom layer of particles of greatest density. From the smallest particles in the bed to the bottom the size increases progressively downwards. When the bed is fluidised in reverse flow cleaning the layers will resettle in their original order. As shown layer 12 comprises polystyrene spheres of density 1.05 and 10mm dia., layer 14 anthracite, density 1.4, 5 mm dia., layer 16, quartz sand, density 2.6, dia 0.6 and layer 18, garnet density 3.8 and dia. ranging from 0.6 at the top to 7 mm at the bottom. Layer 18 could be basalt. The particles in layer 16 could vary in size.
