Abstract

1503480 Electrowinning nickel INCO Ltd 3 Feb 1977 [9 Feb 1976] 04498/77 Heading C7B Ni is electrowon as a levelled S-free deposit at least 0À17 cm thick on a reusable cathode mandrel by electro-deposition at 30 to 90C, cathode current density of at least 200 A/m2 for at least 40 hours, from an aqueous Cl-free electrolyte containing 40 to 130 g/l Ni as SO 4 , 0À5 to 25 g/l MgSO 4 , 75 to 150 g/l Na 2 SO 4 , 0 to 50 g/l boric acid and 30 to 80 mg/l S-free hydrophilic polymer as levelling agent, e.g. dextrin, gum arabic or watersoluble derivative of (such as Na carboxymethyl) cellulose. An anti-misting agent or wetting agent e.g. Na lauryl sulphate is also present. A sand-blasted Ti cathode, preferably bagged and masked with TiO 2 pigmented epoxy paint, a 4% Pb-Sb anode and a polyester cloth diaphragm may be used
