Abstract
1511860 Fuel elements EXXON NUCLEAR CO Inc 30 Dec 1975 [14 Jan 1975] 53134/75 Heading G6C In a method for fuel rod pressurization and for verifying when pressurization of the fuel rod has taken place, one end of the loaded fuel rod 12 is inserted and sealed into a pressure chamber 18, whereupon the chamber is evacuated. Then the chamber 18 is pressurized with an inert gas. The fuel rod 12 is then drilled as by means of a laser 20 to provide an opening 14 in the end 16 of the fuel rod in the chamber, whereupon the rod is pressurized with the inert gas present in the chamber. Acoustic transducers 28, 30 are attached to the fuel rod 12 at predetermined locations externally of the chamber 18 for monitoring any noise which occurs during the pressurization process, which is transmitted through the metal walls of the rod to the transducers. The transducers 28, 30 generate electrical signals which are proportional to the amplitude of the noise sensed and by observing the signals a calibration of the activity going on can be maintained. A pressure transducer 36 is connected with the pressure chamber 18 for monitoring the status of the pressure in the chamber and providing an output signal which is proportional to the pressure. The acoustic and pressure signals are processed through appropriate electronic circuitry 38 to 50 and recorded in analog (45) and digital (50) fashion for providing a comparative indication as to when the necessary steps for pressurization of the fuel rod have been accomplished.
