Abstract

1516340 Sizing paper with anionic polyurethanes AKZO NV 13 Nov 1975 [7 Dec 1974] 46878/75 Heading D2B [Also in Division C3] Paper is sized with a sizing solution containing at least one anionic polyurethane prepared by reacting (A) a monomeric, aliphatic dihydroxyl compound containing an aliphatic substituent containing at least 10 carbon atoms with (B) a polyisocyanate to form an NCO- terminated preadduct and then either (1) chainextending the preadduct either with (a) an aliphatic monomeric diol containing an acid group capable of salt formation and converting the acid group completely or in part into a salt by reaction with a base, or with (b) an aliphatic monomeric diol which contains an acid group which has already been completely or partly neutralised to the corresponding salt group; or (2) reacting the preadduct first with a monomeric aliphatic trihydroxyl compound in a molar ratio of 1:1 and then with a cyclic anhydride of a dicarboxylic acid and converting the acid group formed either completely or in part into a salt by reaction with a base. In the Examples unsized raw paper is surface sized with solutions containing an anionic polyurethane prepared by reacting a glycerol monostearate (or trimethylolpropane monostearate) / tolylene 2, 4- and 2, 6-diisocyanate preadduct with either (I) the triethyl amine salt of either 2, 2′-bishydroxymethylpropionic acid or glycerol monosuccinate, or (2) with trimethylol ethane monosuccinic acid ester and then with triethylamine, or (3) with glycerol, then phthalic acid anhydride and then with triethylamine. The sizing solutions optionally contain starch degraded by oxidation, and an optical lightener.
