Abstract

1517538 Stripping wire INTERNATIONAL STANDARD ELECTRIC CORP 29 July 1975 [29 July 1974] 31732/75 Heading H2C [Also in Division B3] In a wire stripping and wrapping tool which carries out first and second operations at successive terminals, a rotatable stripping and wrapping means is such that after each wrapping operation the means is rotated to alter the site in the tool at which successive stripping operations take place. Fig. 1 shows a tool connected by nipples such as 104 and pressure liner 290 to a control unit 29. The main actions of the tool are a housing 10 and hand grip 19, reciprocating grippers 205, 2051 operated by pneumatic piston 200 to feed a predetermined length of insulated wire 229 into a deflector 28 and thence into a gap 073 in a sleeve 07, a wire cutter 250 operated by pneumatic piston 265, a wrapping bit 05 movable forward and backward by a piston 01 and rotatable by air motor 04 within the piston, the sleeve 07, clutch mechanism 15 for determining whether the sleeve 07 rotates with the bit 05 or is instead keyed to the housing, a sleeve 13 (shown developed in Fig. 10) for rotating the piston 01, and a trigger 195. When the trigger is pulled duct 190 is obturated sending a signal back to unit 29, which admits pressure air to various components in a four-stage cycle. The first time the trigger is pulled, piston 200 is advanced to feed insulated wire across gap 073 during a time delay after which piston 01 is moved forwardly. At the beginning of this movement, Fig. 6, the wrapping bit 05 enters sleeve 07, deforming the wire into V-shape. The free leg of the V is squeezed at 056 so that the insulation is stripped, and the stripped length l 1 1 is drawn into groove 050 in bit 05. The other leg of the V is drawn unstripped into slot 070 in the sleeve this slot being curved so that the transverse end of the V does not lie across the terminalreceiving aperture 052 in the end of the bit. The tool is now placed so that the bit aperture lies over the terminal, and the trigger is pulled a second time. This energizes air motor 40 to rotate the bit alone, to effect wrapping. At the end of wrapping, the bit is brought to rest in a predetermined position relative to the motor. Piston 200 is returned by spring 267, and piston 01 is returned by air pressure. The latter piston has a pin 014 engaging the slots 130, 131, 132, 133 (Fig. 20) in sleeve 13, which with springs 137 ensure that each time the piston returns, it is rotated through 180 degrees together with the bit 05 and sleeve 07. The next time the trigger is operated, cutter 250 shears the wire, and bit 05 advances with groove 050 in its opposite side, Fig. 11, to strip the portion l 3 of the wire. The tool is now placed with aperture 052 over the second terminal 234, and the trigger pulled a fourth time. Motor 04 is energized to rotate the bit and effect wrapping. This time sleeve 07 rotates with the bit, to prevent length l 3 entering slot 070. On the return stroke of the piston 01, it is again rotated through 180 degrees back to its starting orientation. The clutch mechanism 15 has external teeth, and the piston 01 internal teeth, such that at the forward end of the first stroke of the piston, the teeth are aligned longitudinally of the tool, and abut, resulting in movement of a bush to key the sleeve 07 to the housing. At the forward end of the second stroke of the piston, the different orientation of the piston results in the teeth not being aligned, whereby the sleeve is keyed to the bit, as required.
