Abstract

1522089 Editing sound films B W ANDERSON 28 April 1976 [30 April 1975 (2) 15 Dec 1975] 17363/76 Heading G2E [Also in Divisions G4-G6] In an elongated strip having three longitudinally extending bands, each of which can carry sequentially recorded information (e.g. one being a sequence of film images and the other two capable of acting as sound tracks), sound actually recorded on one track is read and recorded on the other sound track at a position longitudinally offset from the first. The invention is used in editing a sound film strip, such as is shown in Fig. 4. This carries a sequence of film scenes on successive frames 18Aa, 18Ab,&c. The corresponding sound is recorded on a magnetic sound stripe 24 (called the principal stripe), the sound being customarily eighteen frames in advance of the film frame to which it relates. Thus as shown in Fig. 4, the crosshatched portion of stripe 24 adjacent frame 18Ab corresponds to the frame 18At. Such an arrangement presents difficulties when editing is required, since corresponding frames and sound are not adjacent but longitudinally offset, so that if a selection of film is cut out and removed, the section of sound track also removed does not correspond. The film strip shown has an additional magnetic stripe 28 along the opposite edge to stripe 24, which acts as a balance stripe. It is known, however, to also make use of the balance stripe for additional sound recording. In the present procedure, two reading and recording sound heads 48, 50 are provided, spaced eighteen frames apart, and located over stripes 24 and 28 respectively. These heads are connected to switching and amplifying devices 56, 58. For an editing operation the tape is moved in direction A. The sound recorded on stripe 24 is read by head 48, and recorded on stripe 28 by head 50, so the sound on stripe 28 now corresponds with the adjacent film frames. The film can now be edited, since the removal of a section of the film will involve only the removal of the corresponding sound track on stripe 28. The film is once again moved in direction A, but this time switch 56 is changed over so that head 50 is the reading head and head 48 the recording head, which at the same time erases any sound information still remaining on stripe 24. Thus the sound on stripe 28 is transferred back on to stripe 24 at the proper longitudinally offset position. Fig. 6 (not shown), is a practical realization of an apparatus for editing the film, incorporating a viewing screen, so that the film may be viewed during the editing process. In Fig. 9 (not shown), the editing system of the invention is incorporated into a film projector. The balance may also be utilized for an additional sound track, or for the superimposition of background music.
